Embracing New Skills: Why Swimming Changed My Life Forever

Chapter 1: A Year of Transformation
As we approach the end of another year, there's a sense of renewal in the air. Soon, we will celebrate the close of one chapter while eagerly welcoming the next.
It's common to lament about the past year, a sentiment that seems to have gained traction since 2020. However, what if 2024 could be different? What if you could shape your experiences and create a life that inspires excitement every day?
Reflecting on the last six years, I identify three pivotal moments that propelled me beyond my expectations:
- I left my job to start my own business in 2018.
- I decided to quit drinking in 2019.
- In 2023, I learned to swim.
Without a doubt, these decisions were some of the best I have ever made.
As 2023 unfolded, I felt a yearning for something more. Yet, I struggled to define what that "more" meant—was it financial gain, time, freedom, or perhaps a deeper engagement with life? Ultimately, I discovered it was the latter; I was searching for new experiences that would enrich my life and make me a more fascinating person, both to myself and to others.
I had no inkling that taking swimming lessons at the age of 37 would be such a transformative experience. It began as a spontaneous thought—an idea that intrigued me. Now, as the year draws to a close, I reflect on how profoundly this choice has impacted my life.
After nine months of swimming lessons, I can now swim for miles, explore lakes, and even participate in triathlons. Yet, the most significant takeaway from this journey has been the realization that I can learn anything if I seek the right guidance.
This belief is currently being tested as I embark on my next challenge: learning to play the guitar. I am determined to prove that all I need is an instructor who can push me beyond my perceived limits, provide accountability, and help me navigate the hurdles I face.
The parallels between learning to swim and mastering the guitar are striking. While I had dabbled in guitar before, I never truly committed to learning. Both endeavors started with a similar foundation—complete novice.
The thrill of trying something new soon gave way to frustration over slow progress, though progress was still evident. During this challenging period, I grasped the importance of mastering the fundamentals.
Erasing the bad habits I've accumulated over the years has been crucial. Poor technique, whether in swimming or playing the guitar, consistently yields unsatisfactory results. This is why having a skilled instructor is invaluable; they can identify and correct my mistakes without hesitation.
As I replace poor techniques with more effective practices, I notice significant improvements. I am swimming longer distances and playing more cohesive chord progressions.
If the trends in my learning journey hold true, I anticipate sharing that I've memorized numerous chords in just a month, played my first complete song, and understood how musicians manipulate chord progressions to influence both the song's mood and the listener's emotions.
Looking back, I recognize that the most significant advancements in my life have emerged from a desire for more. Even without a clear plan, I was willing to take a leap of faith for my future.
My advice as you face the dawn of another year is to take a long, honest look at yourself. Reflect as if you were your own instructor, identifying areas for improvement not to criticize, but to foster growth.
And if you're inspired to learn something new, I highly recommend swimming.
