Navigating the Facade of Mental Wellness Through Poetry

Chapter 1: The Veil of Mental Health
In the dim light of dusk, stories unfold that reveal the struggle of mental wellness. I find myself unable to listen, yet compelled to express; weary from battles fought within an isolating shell where growth is stifled and everything withers beneath a weighty exterior. Yet, I can sense the soft, fortunate footsteps of the oblivious, moving through this rebellious symphony of those blissfully unaware.
There are the pessimistic few who believe their lives are devoid of struggles, dismissing the mental challenges of our time as a mere inconvenience—overcoming the relentless pressure of hustle culture. Depression, anxiety, and the fear of stagnation loom large. I often wonder why I am submerged, my weary head being pulled by unseen forces, dragging my exhausted spirit into despair.
Burdened by the weight of unfathomable depths, I question why I didn’t fight against the tide, tethered instead by unrealized potential. I find no solace; instead, I face the harsh reflections that echo the suffocating feeling of not being able to breathe. These moments are fleeting pieces of tranquility amid a life dominated by imposing barriers. Is a life of perpetual seclusion truly what I desire?

Thank you for engaging with my reflections. This work serves as a personal narrative of my ongoing battles with mental health. Despite receiving immense support from family, friends, and professionals, the journey toward achieving my life goals remains a daily challenge.
Living with conditions like depression and anxiety can feel like a chronic struggle, yet it is manageable. At times, I find myself putting on a façade of normalcy when I am anything but fine. Engaging in physical activity, my job in aged care, and, notably, WRITING provide me with an outlet for catharsis.
Ultimately, it is about outpacing my inner demons and learning to heal more rapidly than before. A heartfelt thanks to the editors at The Howling Owl for providing a platform for my voice.
