The Roman Empire was one of history's most significant empires, transitioning from a republic to a monarchy in 27 AD. Decius Trajan was the first Roman emperor to perish in battle against invaders. He ruled from 249 to 251 AD and became well-known for his military engagements against the Germanic tribes, particularly the Goths. Commanded by Emperor Philip the Arab, Decius sought to quell a rebellion along the Danube, which ultimately led to his troops proclaiming him emperor in 249.
In that same year, he returned to Rome victorious, defeating Philip the Arab's forces at the Battle of Verona. However, he was ultimately killed in battle, with his son, Philip II, also meeting a tragic end in Rome. The Senate subsequently recognized Decius as emperor.
Following his ascent, Decius continued to combat the Goths. His reign was cut short after just two years when he was defeated and died in battle, making him the first emperor to fall in combat against external foes.

What particularly intrigued archaeologists was the statue's depiction of Decius as Hercules. He is portrayed wearing the skin of the Nemean lion, one of Hercules' legendary adversaries.
“Statues of so-called soldier emperors are extremely rare. They refer to rulers who governed the Empire from approximately 235 to 284 AD. This was a turbulent era characterized by frequent invasions from Germanic tribes,” explained Sam Heijnen, an archaeologist from Vrije University Amsterdam involved in the excavation.
While scholars are uncertain whether Decius himself commissioned this representation or if it was created by someone else, it likely served to express reverence for Roman mythology. It may have also reflected a political strategy, as Christianity was on the rise during this period, culminating in its official recognition as the empire's religion by Theodosius I in the late 4th century.
