Understanding NFTs: A Comprehensive Guide for Beginners

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to NFTs

In a nutshell, an NFT, or Non-Fungible Token, can be described simply as a certificate of authenticity. That's the essence of it! Now, let's delve a little deeper.

Illustration depicting NFT characteristics

One of the most notable examples of an NFT is Picasso's artwork titled "Women of Algers," which is valued at an astonishing $179 million. So, what exactly is an NFT?

NFTs are unique digital tokens that cannot be exchanged on a one-to-one basis like traditional currency. For comparison, consider fungible tokens such as dollars or Bitcoin—each unit of these currencies holds the same value and can be traded without loss. However, when it comes to artworks, like two different Picasso paintings, each piece is distinct and carries its own unique value. The least expensive Picasso paintings can go for around $100,000, which is a mere fraction of the value of his most expensive work.

This distinction means that you can't simply swap one Picasso for another without one party losing out. NFTs function similarly to art—they are often misunderstood as just "cartoon images of animals." In reality, each NFT serves as a digital certificate that contains specific data about what it verifies, whether that be an image, a video, or even real estate.

For a clearer picture, consider the Bored Ape #7033 from the popular Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT collection:

This image can be conflated with the certificate itself, and people often refer to it simply as an NFT. To explore more NFTs, check out OpenSea, the leading NFT marketplace, where various collections can be discovered.

Section 1.1: What Exactly Is a Token?

You might wonder, "What is a token?" This is a crucial question. While discussing fungibility, I intentionally left out the definition of tokens. Tokens are essentially certificates that exist on a blockchain.

For those new to the world of cryptocurrency, a blockchain can be thought of as a digital ledger maintained by volunteers known as miners, who are incentivized through financial rewards. In simpler terms, a blockchain functions like an accounting book that records all transactions and certificates.

There are numerous types of certificates, each existing on different blockchains. In technical terms, a certificate is referred to as a smart contract—a piece of code that governs the behavior of a specific set of tokens. For instance, the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs are managed by a smart contract that limits the total number of unique apes to 10,000, each associated with distinct data regarding its image and attributes.

Unlike early blockchains such as Bitcoin, which lack smart contract functionality, Ethereum was the first to introduce NFTs as a format (known as ERC-721 tokens in technical lingo).

The first video provides a clear introduction to NFTs, making it perfect for those just starting out. It covers the basics of what NFTs are and why they matter in today's digital landscape.

The second video offers a concise explanation of NFTs in just 60 seconds, ideal for quick learners or those looking for a brief overview of the subject.
