Navigating Life and Business in Times of Crisis

Chapter 1: Embracing Change
In early March 2020, I held my biannual marketing conference in Manhattan Beach, California, a tradition I had maintained for over a decade. Little did I know that by the weekend's end, everything would change drastically. A wedding with two hundred guests was canceled, flight crews that usually occupied our hotel were returning home, and by Monday morning, my attendees were the only ones left at the venue. Rumors circulated among the hotel staff that the flu we had been hearing about could be more serious than previously thought. The COVID-19 pandemic fundamentally altered our lives. Until that second week of March, we had no idea our "world" would suddenly shrink to our homes!
This situation serves as a stark reminder of the value of freedom and the necessity of human connection. It's crucial to recognize that you are not alone in this experience. Everyone — your neighbors, family, colleagues, and countless others worldwide — is facing similar challenges.
As Viktor E. Frankl famously stated, "Everything can be taken from a person except for one thing: the last of the human freedoms — to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way." This is the challenge we all must meet! If we find ourselves confined at home, we might as well make the best of it.
Here are several ways you can enhance your life while physically isolated:
Section 1.1: Establish a Supportive Routine
When feeling powerless, creating a routine can provide a sense of control. The days may start to blend together, but a schedule can serve as an anchor. This routine doesn't have to be complex; it can be as simple as:
- 7:00 AM — Wake up
- 8:00 AM — Exercise
- 9:00 AM — Breakfast
- 11:00 AM — Work online
- 12:00 PM — Lunch
- 1:00 PM — Learning or home projects
- 5:00 PM — Dinner
- 7:00 PM — Family time
- 8:00 PM — Reading or journaling
- 10:00 PM — Bedtime
Make sure to include activities like food prep, socializing (virtually if needed), exercise, and learning. Interestingly, I had planned to start intermittent fasting on March 9th, the day after my event, thanks to insights from my guest speakers. This practice has significantly improved my health, providing me with control over my eating habits.
It’s also vital to differentiate weekends from weekdays. Consider incorporating:
- Sleeping in
- Brunch
- Movie nights
- Virtual happy hours
- Creative projects
A routine can help restore a sense of normalcy amid the chaos.
Section 1.2: Strengthen Your Body
Improving your physical strength can be empowering and beneficial for your health. Even short bursts of activity can yield significant results. Consider incorporating:
- Yoga for flexibility and strength
- Push-ups or sit-ups
- Online fitness classes from platforms like PopSugar Fitness
Remember, feeling stronger physically can lead to increased feelings of empowerment!

Section 1.3: Expand Your Knowledge
Use this time to delve into non-fiction books that can enhance your skills and knowledge. Whether it's developing negotiation skills or gaining insights into health, there are countless resources available. Here are a few suggestions:
- "The Now Habit" by Neil Fiore
- "Dare to Lead" by Brené Brown
- "Why We Sleep" by Matthew Walker
Reading even one book can broaden your perspective, while multiple reads can enhance your employability and skill set.

Section 2.1: Online Learning Opportunities
Take advantage of online platforms like Coursera or Udemy to learn new skills. The options are vast and range from free to affordable courses, so you're likely to find something that fits your interests.
Section 2.2: Envision Your Future
Instead of fixating on the news, consider your long-term goals. Visualizing your life in ten years can be a powerful motivator. Ponder these questions to guide your reflection:
- What do you truly desire in life?
- How do you want to feel?
- What changes do you seek?
Remember to dream big and explore possibilities without self-imposed limitations.
Section 2.3: Mindfulness and Presence
Practice being present. Acknowledge that in this moment, you are safe. This practice may require repetition, but it can significantly alleviate anxiety.
Extra Tip: Limit your news consumption and avoid checking updates before bedtime.
Section 2.4: Find Joy in Laughter
Laughter can be an effective coping mechanism. It releases endorphins, which can improve your mood. Explore your favorite comedies, whether through streaming services or stand-up specials.
Section 2.5: Journaling for Self-Discovery
Starting a journal can be transformative. Use it to reflect on your experiences and feelings. Consider prompts like:
- "Today I feel _______ because _______."
- "One lesson I've learned during this crisis is _______."
A journal can serve as a valuable tool for self-exploration.
Section 2.6: Embracing Kindness
In these uncertain times, kindness is essential. Practice self-compassion and extend understanding to others. Imagine what you would say to a frightened friend and offer that same reassurance to yourself.
Section 2.7: Helping Others
Volunteering can be immensely fulfilling. Reach out to neighbors or friends to see if they need assistance. Whether it's grocery shopping or hosting virtual gatherings, acts of kindness can uplift both you and others.
Section 2.8: Aligning with Core Values
Understanding your values is crucial for leading a meaningful life. List your values and assess how well you're living in accordance with them. Reflect on how you can express these values more fully during this time.
Section 2.9: Decluttering Your Space
Use this time to organize your environment. Decluttering can help restore a sense of control. Tackle one area at a time, setting aside items to keep, donate, or discard.
Section 2.10: Cultivating Growth
Consider starting a small indoor garden or caring for a houseplant. Nurturing something can boost your spirits and provide a rewarding experience.
Section 2.11: The Art of Letter-Writing
Rediscover the joy of writing letters. A handwritten note can brighten someone's day. Share your thoughts and appreciation in a personal way.
Section 2.12: Meditation for Inner Peace
Meditation can foster calmness and creativity. Start with just a few minutes each day and gradually build your practice. Guided meditations can offer a helpful introduction.
