MidJourney vs Stable Diffusion: A Comparison of AI Art Tools
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction to AI Art Generators
If you're anything like me, you're constantly searching for exciting new AI art generation tools. These innovative resources are emerging rapidly across the internet. Two of my current favorites are MidJourney and Stable Diffusion.
In recent months, MidJourney's text-to-image AI tool has undergone significant enhancements. The results now feature greater detail and the facial proportions in portraits have improved noticeably. Meanwhile, although Stable Diffusion is a relatively new contender, its outputs are equally impressive when compared to MidJourney.
To illustrate this, let’s delve into a side-by-side comparison of images generated by both tools.
Section 1.1: Living Room Prompt
Prompt: Inside a living room with flowers, thin contour lines, unreal engine, fantasy art by Greg, Loish, Rhads, Ferdinand Knab, Tom Bagshaw, Makoto Shinkai, Lois van Baarle, Rossdraws, Ilya Kuvshinov, night lighting, trending on Studio Ghibli, highly detailed, 8K, octane render.

Personally, I find the left image more appealing due to its subtle and organic feel. Conversely, the right image is still visually stunning, showcasing vibrant colors and saturation.
Subsection 1.1.1: Warrior Robot Astronaut
Prompt: A warrior robot astronaut, floral, posing for a fight, intricate, elegant, highly detailed, digital painting, ArtStation, concept art, smooth, sharp focus, illustration, art by Artgerm, Greg Rutkowski, and Alphonse Mucha, 8K.

In this instance, Stable Diffusion emerges as the clear winner. Its output is both elegant and visually striking, resembling a poster for an animated robot film. The MidJourney version, however, feels slightly off.
Section 1.2: Last Summer’s Day
Prompt: A place in Wales, tucked out of view, magic happens, only seen by a few, for just one day, for only just one hour. The last summer's day break at Gelli Aur. There you must follow a winding trout stream, search all the oaks with a tiny light beam, inspired by Greg Rutkowski and Charlie Bowater.

Once again, Stable Diffusion excels with this prompt. Despite the obvious painting style, it possesses a unique charm that is captivating. In contrast, the second image feels less realistic and more painterly, likely due to its muted colors and high contrast.
Chapter 2: More Creative Prompts
Prompt: Ice goddess with beautiful face, glowing blue crystal on her forehead, frosty white eyes, winter mist around her, white plated armor, pale skin, white smoke, photorealism, octane render, frostbite, 8K, cinematic, 35mm.

In this case, I find it challenging to choose a favorite. The left image offers a more natural appearance, while the right one showcases intricate details that make the ice goddess look as if she was sculpted from ice.
Prompt: Interdimensional galaxy portal covered in frost, ice gate, volumetric light, volumetric fog, unreal engine, photorealistic, 8K.

Do I even need to say which one I prefer?
Prompt: Beautiful dark magician girl, full body, mystical, ultra-detailed, 4K.

When it comes to intricate details, MidJourney clearly stands out.
Which AI Art Tool Reigns Supreme?
When evaluating image quality, it's a close race. While both tools can produce stunning visuals, MidJourney tends to have the edge in artistic detail. On the other hand, Stable Diffusion often generates images that appear more lifelike.
So, which should you opt for? If you're just starting out, Stable Diffusion is a great choice as it’s completely free and user-friendly. For those with more experience or in search of finer details, MidJourney is worth a shot.
