Unlocking Insights Through Writing: A Guide to Decision Growth

Chapter 1: The Power of Thought
Your thoughts can unlock solutions, but it requires action—specifically, writing them down.
Each week, I provide actionable decision-making strategies to foster Decision Growth. Join my mailing list to receive next week's insights.
While contemplation is vital, merely sitting alone with your thoughts isn't sufficient. Finding a quiet space for deep reflection can be a challenge, let alone maintaining focus on a problem.
It takes a unique mindset—akin to that of Brunello Cucinelli—to sit back and let your mind wander freely, contemplating questions and potential answers like flames flickering on a cold Sunday afternoon. For many, this experience can be either bliss or torment.
If you find solace in such stillness, savor the moment. However, if you struggle with it, I propose an alternative method to enhance your thinking process and uncover solutions: Write to Your Mentor.
Section 1.1: Seeking Guidance
Two recent guests on Tim Ferriss's podcast—Derek Sivers and Kevin Kelly—highlighted the importance of consulting a mentor. Their methods reveal how writing can catalyze thought.
Derek's approach serves as an excellent example of how writing and reflection can be intertwined. He begins by articulating the challenge he faces. This isn't an elaborate document; rather, it's a concise paragraph or two broken down into bullet points that clarify the issue.
Through this process, Derek is compelled to thoroughly consider the problem. This often leads to new questions emerging as he writes, such as:
- What is the cause of this issue?
- What lies at the heart of the problem?
- Why did the outcome differ from my expectations?
Derek is mindful not to waste his mentor's time, so he ensures all questions are addressed. If clarity remains elusive, he then imagines how his mentor might respond, which shifts his perspective away from his own thoughts.
Tim Ferriss and Kevin Kelly employ similar techniques, making it evident that the act of articulating a problem often leads to its resolution before even seeking external help.

Section 1.2: Five Steps to Clarity
One of the most appealing aspects of this exercise is its accessibility—anyone can implement it in just five steps:
- Sit down with your computer or a notebook and write about the issue.
- Summarize your thoughts into bullet points.
- Anticipate any questions your mentor might have.
- Consider how your mentor would approach the situation.
- Record your insights.
It's important to note that this process isn't simple. Transforming your thoughts into written form requires considerable effort. The act of condensing your ideas into bullet points challenges your understanding in profound ways.
Ultimately, your thoughts do contain the solutions you seek. Often, the barrier is a lack of deep contemplation.
