In the realm of business, endurance is key. The individual who remains in the game the longest ultimately emerges victorious. Take Warren Buffett, for example; his wealth stems from starting young and continuously reinvesting his returns for over fifty years. This principle is particularly relevant for solo entrepreneurs.

In a world obsessed with immediate results, adopting a long-term perspective can significantly enhance your chances of outlasting other solo ventures. That has been my strategy as well.

While I may not possess extraordinary business acumen, I embrace a marathon mindset. For the past decade, I've focused on a vision and the problems at hand. I plan over several years, conduct quarterly evaluations, and engage in daily actions.

Section 1.1: Crafting a Vision for the Next Decade

My vision for the next ten years is straightforward: I aim to tackle the challenges faced by entrepreneurs, empowering them to address global issues. This mission is ongoing and does not have a definitive endpoint, providing me with a clear sense of direction regarding who I want to collaborate with and the impact I aspire to create.

Every decision I make aligns with this vision. While my strategies may evolve, my vision remains steadfast. Establishing a clear definition of success and failure is crucial, as it creates accountability—a challenge many find difficult to manage. Without a vision, actions lack purpose.

Section 1.2: Establishing an Annual Strategy

This is where your plans become actionable. An annual strategy fosters focus; it’s long enough to achieve significant outcomes yet brief enough to allow for course corrections. Set a target date for December 2024 and outline the key results you wish to accomplish. Each result should align with your overarching vision.

For instance, some of my ambitious targets include:

  • 50,000 followers on Medium
  • 10,000 subscribers to my email newsletter
  • $50,000 in digital product sales

Admittedly, these figures can be daunting, but that’s a sign that I’m pushing my boundaries. Your yearly objectives should challenge you to grow.

Chapter 2: Reflections and Adjustments

Section 2.1: Quarterly Reflections

A three-month period is ideal for making substantial progress. Any longer, and you risk losing sight of your vision; any shorter, and you might not allocate enough time to effect change. I break down my annual strategy into four quarters, establishing metrics for where I need to be at the end of each quarter. Regular adjustments to my forecasts are vital for success.

At the conclusion of each quarter, I take a personal retreat, often booking an Airbnb near nature or the beach. This is a time to disrupt my routine, reflect on my progress, recalibrate my expectations, and immerse myself in the tranquility of nature. These breaks are essential for maintaining focus; without them, distractions can easily derail my plans.

Section 2.2: Daily Actions for Continuous Improvement

I firmly believe in making incremental improvements of 1% each day. Why? Because taking action is straightforward and manageable. Examples of daily enhancements could include: experimenting with new copy, incorporating fresh techniques into storytelling, or engaging with new learning resources.

This approach means that over time, you can become 37 times better than when you began—thanks to the power of compounding. It’s crucial to take action, especially when it feels challenging. And remember to find joy in the process.

I often find myself achieving a goal and quickly moving on without fully appreciating the accomplishment. However, since I’m committed to this solo business journey for the long haul, it’s essential to relish the journey. Celebrate both the small and significant victories. Always remember: Slow and steady wins the race. Successful solo businesses are cultivated over time, not instantaneously. Any overnight success you observe is typically the result of years of dedicated effort. The solo entrepreneurs I admire have navigated their journeys for five years or more.
