In the writing world, fluctuating earnings can create feelings of frustration and self-doubt. Recently, I found myself obsessively checking my article statistics daily. Witnessing an increase in my income from recent pieces fueled a sense of greed that drove me to write more frequently. However, this approach ultimately diminished my productivity.

Despite receiving numerous claps, the number of readers didn't reflect that enthusiasm. The reason? I shifted my focus from quality to quantity, which proved to be a significant error.

My journey serves as a reminder that the quality of your writing is far more crucial than sheer volume, especially for newcomers on platforms like Medium. Producing a plethora of insipid articles devoid of value not only squanders your time but can also impede your writing career's progress.

Here’s a snapshot of my statistics when I prioritized quality over quantity: 8–15 March 2024 Medium stats.

Now compare this to my recent stats, where I worked harder but regrettably produced lower quality content: 15–22 March 2024 Medium Stats.

This week, I experienced nearly 100 fewer views and half the engagement compared to the previous week. Somewhere along the way, I lost sight of what attracted over 150 followers in just 2.5 months: the quality of my storytelling and authentic engagement.

Rather than churning out articles daily for monetary gain and receiving diminished returns, I am now dedicated to taking the time to craft pieces that genuinely assist others.

The lesson here is clear: quantity holds little value without quality, a principle that resonates across all industries. This insight stems from my background in the arts.

It's essential to step back from the daily habit of checking your stats for earnings. Instead, focus on honing your craft. Remember, you are a writer for a reason—to provide insights that address people's needs and challenges.
