Chapter 1: The Value of Enlightenment

In recent weeks, I've come across some insightful articles on Medium. However, I often find myself sifting through a lot of negativity. Many authors seem focused on selling you a dream of wealth or instant fame, urging you to follow them as if they were gurus. This can be quite disheartening.

Reflecting on a quote from Saint Thomas Aquinas, which suggests that it’s “better to enlighten than to merely shine,” prompts us to consider our impact. Are we simply glowing in the dark, or are we actually guiding others? It’s essential for each of us to shine, but even more crucial to help others find their paths, ensuring they feel valued and loved.

If you possess a unique talent, I urge you to showcase it. Don’t keep it hidden. Sacred scripture also emphasizes this point (Romans 12:7 onwards): “If your gift is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is encouraging, then encourage; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do so diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”

Rather than just being a light, you must enlighten others, guiding them on their journeys. While everyone must navigate their own path, sharing your experiences can provide hope and inspiration. If someone is facing challenges, help them by sharing your insights.

It's a common misconception that only the educated can impart knowledge. You, too, have the ability to teach. Have you ever felt as though you have little to offer? That perception is misleading. Engaging with those around you will reveal how your presence can shift their perspectives.

Don't hold back. Shine and enlighten. Consider a practical example: racism has no place in our society. We are all equal from the moment of creation. By standing against racism and joining a collective voice, you are shining a light on the issue, declaring that it is unacceptable. However, don’t stop there—extend your reach to enlighten others.

When confronted with situations of racial discrimination, educate those around you about its harmful effects. Show them that we are all equal and that such intolerance only fosters division rather than unity and love.
