# Startups: Strategies for Tomorrow and Beyond

Chapter 1 Understanding Tomorrow’s Strategies

In the realm of entrepreneurship, many business leaders fall into two common traps when devising their product strategies: they either concentrate solely on the present or focus on the immediate future. Both approaches can be detrimental. The most effective strategy involves contemplating the future—specifically, the day after tomorrow—while taking actionable steps in the present.

Section 1.1 The Blue Ocean Strategy Misconception

In 2007, I was leading a wholesale enterprise that specialized in food production components. I had recently been inspired by the book "Blue Ocean Strategy," which had been released not long before. Motivated by its insights, I organized a strategic retreat for my team to create our market's Strategic Canvas and identify our potential 'blue ocean.'

The concept is straightforward. By evaluating the value propositions that your competitors provide to customers, you can differentiate your offerings by:

  1. Delivering value that your competitors do not.
  2. Conserving resources by not replicating what is already available from your rivals.

This approach seems simple and may yield results—but it can also lead to unexpected challenges, as I discovered in my own experience.

Subsection 1.1.1 Lessons Learned from the Strategic Canvas

Strategic Canvas representation for market analysis

After analyzing our Strategic Canvas, we opted to prioritize a fast delivery service. This decision necessitated significant investment in establishing a nationwide warehouse network. It was a large-scale, long-term endeavor. However, we soon realized that our competitors had initiated similar projects approximately a year prior to our own.

During our retreat, we were convinced we had formulated a groundbreaking idea, yet our proposed 'fast delivery service' was noticeably absent from the industry value curve we created. By the time we completed our infrastructure, our competitors had already been providing fast delivery for over six months.
