Navigating Fatherhood: Lessons from a Potential Dad's Perspective
Written on
Understanding the Parental Role
The concept of fatherhood perplexes me. I often imagine guiding my future child in becoming a compassionate individual, nurturing respect for others and the planet, as well as promoting independent thought.
I envision myself being strict yet supportive, emphasizing that every action carries consequences, but I would never punish my child for being original. I would not want them to overly focus on grades or the pressure of higher education.
If I were to have kids, I would want them to embrace their humanity and not tie their self-esteem to societal benchmarks. My hesitation in saying “if” stems from my fear of failing as a parent. I worry about losing myself and my aspirations after becoming a dad, especially when I haven’t yet reached my personal goals.
Currently, I'm fully committed to self-growth, investing significantly in becoming a better person and contributing positively to society. The question lingers: how can I dedicate myself to being a great father if I’m still working on myself?
Reflections on My Own Parents
I was fortunate to have amazing parents. I truly believe I chose the best possible ones before coming into this world. They’re open-minded, slightly rebellious, and resilient, but most importantly, they are incredibly loving and understanding.
When I decided to drop out of college, my mom was not thrilled, yet she continued to support me. I’ve become a living testament that one doesn’t need a degree to find happiness and success. My dad, on the other hand, was upset when I first left home for misguided reasons, leading to a tumultuous goodbye. Over time, however, our relationship strengthened, and he is now one of my closest friends. I hold immense respect for him.
Key Lessons from My Parents
1. Avoid Being a Lifelong Employee
My parents have launched several businesses, which could have flourished if they had dedicated themselves fully. They are natural entrepreneurs, but moving to the U.S. dimmed their entrepreneurial spark. They worked hard for my brother and me to have a bright future. Their sacrifices are evident as we now pursue ambitious careers, allowing them to enjoy a comfortable life in Colombia.
My father's success in the entertainment industry taught me that no matter how good you are, your fate can rest in someone else’s hands. He always encouraged us to forge our own paths and to avoid becoming dependent on others for our livelihood.
Action: Utilize every moment to learn, organize, or recharge. Invest in your skills to become your own boss.
2. Don’t Hesitate to Request What You Deserve
Having worked alongside my father, I learned the importance of asking for what you believe you deserve. His remarkable creativity and expertise as an editor allowed him to confidently request raises, regardless of potential backlash. When the company couldn’t match his skills, he sought new opportunities.
Action: If you’ve been putting in the effort, don’t shy away from asking for a raise or finding better-paying clients.
3. Express Yourself Authentically
My parents are the life of any gathering. My mom is inquisitive and genuinely interested in others, while my dad is unafraid to voice his thoughts. Staying true to your beliefs fosters trust and relationships; not everyone will appreciate you, but those who do will form strong connections.
Action: Share your interests and opinions openly, even if they are controversial.
4. Embrace Humor as a Superpower
Without a doubt, my dad is the funniest person I know. His knack for humor has allowed him to form great connections, often lightening the mood with clever quips. Inspired by him, I’ve made it my goal to develop my own sense of humor.
To become funnier, one must speak their mind as thoughts arise and not shy away from sharing jokes. Initially, you may face awkward moments, but with practice, you will find your comedic timing improving.
Do's: Intentionally aim to be humorous. Surround yourself with funny individuals. Share plenty of jokes. Use puns when in doubt.
Don'ts: Avoid making others feel bad. Refrain from mocking or criticizing.
Humor has opened numerous doors for me, enhancing my charm and social connections. My parents exemplify that parenthood can also mean friendship, not just authority. I cherish my relationship with them and the lessons they've imparted.
