Chapter 1: Unlocking Apple’s Privacy Feature
Apple's "Hide My Email" is an often-overlooked feature that can significantly enhance your privacy. By this, I don’t mean to misuse it; rather, I will guide you on how to utilize this tool to simplify your life while maintaining your anonymity.
The "Hide My Email" feature is a straightforward yet powerful resource available with an iCloud+ subscription, which I recently decided to upgrade to.
Four Compelling Reasons to Upgrade to iCloud+
Once subscribed, you can generate a seemingly infinite number of unique, random email addresses that redirect messages to your personal inbox without disclosing your actual email. Isn’t that impressive?
For instance, I just created a new email address:
This address, “[email protected],” is now mine for life! If at any point you wish to change your email, you can simply click the ?? button to generate a new one. You’ll also need to tag the address, perhaps by the name of the contact or website it’s associated with, and you can add optional notes for better organization.
How to Utilize It Effectively
#1. For Personal Interactions
Many of us have experienced the awkwardness of being asked for our email by someone we don’t know well. Instead of sharing your personal address, "Hide My Email" can be your savior.
When someone requests your email, you can quickly pull out your iPhone and create a unique address to share with them.
If you find yourself inundated with unwanted emails or no longer wish to maintain contact, you can easily deactivate or delete the address. Remember, while deactivated emails can be restored with a single tap, deleted ones are permanently lost and won't be reused by anyone else.
Why is this important? It ensures that you won’t be bothered by spam from any site you regrettably signed up for.
Also, when composing an email, the default mail app prompts you to use "Hide My Email" for added convenience.
#2. For Newsletters
As a tech blogger, I subscribe to numerous newsletters to keep up with the latest in technology. Unfortunately, I often receive emails from websites I didn’t sign up for, which likely sold my data.
Instead of unsubscribing from these unwanted emails, I simply deleted the "Hide My Email" addresses I had used with those less trustworthy sites, effectively decluttering my inbox.
Now, those unwanted emails can be sent to my disposable email addresses, leaving my primary inbox clean.
#3. For App Registrations
I enjoy experimenting with new apps available on the App Store, many of which allow signup via Apple.
When you opt for "Sign up with Apple" on an app’s login page, you can choose to share your real email or use "Hide My Email." However, be cautious—if you delete the random address later, your account may become inaccessible.
Conclusion
In summary, "Hide My Email" is an incredibly useful feature that allows you to maintain your privacy while interacting online. With the ability to create unlimited addresses, you can easily manage your digital interactions without compromising your identity.
