Natural science is characterized as “the domain of science that investigates the laws and phenomena of the material world and their interrelations.” This definition implies that natural sciences are applicable to all life aspects, as humans are integral to nature. Observations of trends within natural sciences can be identified across all domains, particularly in technology and society. While evolution has not made us inherently reliant on technology, our current situations necessitate its use.

Technology comprises several fundamental elements, primarily tools, methods, and systems. Methods consist of various sub-methods that lead to successful outcomes (Moore). For instance, in automobiles, the engine operates on gasoline, while brakes serve to halt the vehicle, among other functions.
Systems are formed by components with differing purposes; for example, a computer integrates hardware and software.
Chapter 3: The Dual Nature of Technology
Technology has undeniably provided numerous advantages, most notably in reducing pain and suffering. Some argue that advancements in technology have contributed to increased life expectancy (Tainter). However, it is crucial to recognize the adverse effects associated with technology, particularly regarding pollution, including noise, air, and water contamination (Bijker).
For example, burning fossil fuels for electricity generation has led to significant environmental impacts, including climate change (Huesemann).
Moreover, technology has transformed society in various ways, facilitating mobility and long-distance communication. Innovations in transportation technology have enabled constant movement and task rotation.
Applying the natural sciences lens to technology and society allows us to evaluate both the positive and negative repercussions of technological advancements. An illustrative example of this perspective can be found in Ridley Scott’s film “Prometheus,” where a team of Earth scientists journeys to another planet to discover new life forms, confronting unforeseen consequences of their technological pursuits.

Despite the substantial benefits technology provides to society, it is vital to remain aware of potential negative ramifications.
