Chapter 1: A Sudden Hiatus

Recently, I decided to take a break from writing on Medium for 20 days, an unplanned choice triggered by a significant family event — my sister's wedding, which holds immense personal value for me.

Normally, I would have ensured my posts were scheduled to maintain activity on my account. However, after exhausting my drafts, I pondered, “What if I let my account run on its own?”

In the two months prior, I had published 105 pieces, built solid connections, and started forming a community of fellow writers. So, what transpired on my account during this pause? Did my statistics decline as anticipated? Surprisingly, they did not.

One of my articles gained unexpected traction while I was away, achieving results beyond my expectations. Initially published in March, it had only accrued around $4.89, but during my 20-day absence, its earnings soared to over $115.

Additionally, a couple of other articles, which were published right before my break, also began to gain momentum. In total, I earned approximately $244 from the Medium Partner Program during my time off. I even made a $7 passive sale, and a kind reader supported my work with a $5 coffee donation — thank you, Dianne M Daniels!

What about my follower count? It increased significantly, rising from 1,300 to over 1,500 — that's about 200 new followers over the course of 20 days, translating to an average of 10 new followers each day. Although this was less than the 30-50 daily followers I typically gained when actively writing, it was still a notable improvement.

Is writing on Medium genuinely passive? Not entirely.

While nothing can be considered 100% passive, there is a level of passiveness that can be achieved after investing considerable effort. Think of it as a snowball effect — once you initiate it, the momentum can carry on its own, but an initial push is essential.

Ultimately, while Medium can offer some degree of passive growth, the cornerstone is consistent effort at the outset. Thus, if life pulls you away for a while, you might return to some delightful surprises.
