From FAANG to Freedom: Why I Admire Entrepreneurs Now

Chapter 1: The Illusion of Prestige
In my journey as a data scientist employed by a Fortune Global 500 organization, I once held a great deal of admiration for those who worked at FAANG companies. The allure of financial security, the reputation of these firms, and the attractive benefits they provide contributed to my perception that these jobs were the ultimate goal.
While a lucrative paycheck, pleasant workspaces, and promising career prospects are aspirations for many, one must ponder the true cost of such positions.
This paragraph will result in an indented block of text, typically used for quoting other text.
Section 1.1: The Price of a Big Paycheck
At major tech firms, the concept of freedom can take on different meanings. Here’s a look at the kinds of freedom that may be sacrificed:
- Time Management: What good is a high salary if you lack the time to enjoy your life? Financial resources can indeed enhance happiness, but if you are perpetually busy, that wealth loses its value. The irony is that while you may wish to purchase back the lost time, it remains an elusive commodity.
- Personal Life Ownership: Big tech companies often expect a significant commitment from their employees, cloaked in the guise of passion for work. While the pay may be generous, the expectation to prioritize company issues—even during off-hours—can erode personal freedom.
They might entice you with various perks—like health insurance, fitness programs, and entertainment options—but the question remains: Are you truly in charge of your life, or merely spending your time according to their preferences?
Section 1.2: The Lack of Choice
Consider the number of unproductive meetings you've attended or the mundane projects you've been assigned. How much of your workday is consumed by trivial emails that barely impact your role?
In many cases, you find yourself obliged to participate in these activities without the opportunity to decide what is worthwhile. I used to find humor in the notion that I was paid to attend meetings and skim emails, but the reality is disheartening: I never had the choice to engage in meaningful work that could advance my career. The privilege to choose how to work is seldom afforded in large tech environments.
Chapter 2: The Harsh Reality of Office Life
In one workplace, a prominent motto adorned the wall: “No Pain, No Gain.” I believed that this was the key to success, but I was gravely mistaken.
The truth is that hard work does not guarantee proportional rewards. You could significantly boost productivity and revenue for your employer, yet your salary may remain unchanged. Sure, you might receive a pat on the back, an occasional day off, or even a joking reference to a promotion, but in the end, your financial compensation is often stagnant.
This imbalance leads to a disheartening reality where, upon leaving the company, only a handful of colleagues may recall your contributions.
Now I Value the Path of Creators
My thoughts on FAANG have shifted. While I recognize that any well-paying job demands a lot from its employees, the real question is: How can one achieve genuine freedom and receive adequate recognition for their efforts?
The answer is simple: pursue your own ventures.
It doesn’t matter what form this takes. Build something that is uniquely yours and can reward your hard work:
- Create a Product: Address a real-world issue.
- Develop an App: Tackle a specific challenge.
- Share Knowledge: Craft a course if teaching is your strength.
- Express Yourself: Start a blog or write a book if writing is your passion.
Over time, these endeavors can lead to multiple income sources, offering both financial security and the freedom you desire.
Admittedly, the initial stages may require more effort for less reward, but as you progress, the balance will shift toward working less and earning more.
I’m not suggesting an immediate departure from your 9-to-5 job or abandoning aspirations of working at FAANG. Continue striving for that opportunity, but be mindful to venture beyond your comfort zone and start building your own path.
The prospect of returning to a traditional job at FAANG no longer appeals to me; the thought of falling back into a routine is daunting. Nearly two years have passed without any inclination to seek employment again.
