Empower Your Voice: Overcoming Gatekeepers in Storytelling

Chapter 1: Breaking Through Barriers
This is an excerpt from the introduction of my upcoming book, set for release in the summer of 2022. I am eager to share a portion of it with my Medium readers.
An Outdated Perspective
During my research, I stumbled upon a controversial op-ed by Joseph Epstein from 2002, titled "Think You Have a Book in You? Think Again." In it, he claims that while 81% of Americans believe they have a book within them, only a select few should actually write one. In my exploration of the article, I found a plethora of angry blog responses to his claims. It's amusing to note that, two decades later, anyone can self-publish their work with ease!
The Existence of Gatekeepers
Historically, gatekeepers have worked to keep the "common person" from accessing spaces they deem exclusive. Even today, people act as gatekeepers, hindering others from pursuing their dreams. Yet, in our modern era, these gatekeepers are often those who attempt to silence your voice rather than block your opportunities.
In my own experience, during 2017-2018, I was a spirited 22-year-old eager to make my mark. I was full of passion and determination, ready to seize opportunities and establish my identity. However, especially within the Christian community, ambition was often viewed as a grave sin. I faced discouragement from trusted individuals who advised me to remain humble and work quietly, avoiding any pursuit of ambition.
It's important to clarify that those who tried to dissuade me were not inherently bad; rather, they had a limited perspective on those of us who yearn to share our stories.
Types of Gatekeepers
The Toxic Gatekeepers
Negative individuals have always existed. Since the dawn of time, some have sought to hold others back, adding poison to wounds instead of offering encouragement. These gatekeepers are particularly harmful because they often dominate conversations with their negativity.
The Self-Doubting Gatekeepers
These gatekeepers evoke sadness. They hold others back because, at some point, someone discouraged them from pursuing their dreams. This is heartbreaking; instead of overcoming their own gatekeepers, they become one.
Before we delve deeper, let me share something essential that you may not have heard before:
Your Story is Valuable
Believe me when I say that your story is significant.
In the chapters to follow, we will explore the reasons behind sharing our narratives and delve into your motivations. But for now, know this: your story matters.
Your Ambitions are Valid
It's perfectly fine to aspire to create a business, write a book, or start a podcast. Whatever your goal, your ambition is commendable. When pursued with integrity, it can distinguish you in a crowded world.
You Can Achieve Your Goals
Don't let your dreams feel unattainable. Your aspirations are not distant fantasies; they can become reality. Growing up, I often thought my goals were unreachable. Yet, as I matured, I began to check off my achievements: launching my podcast, earning income from my writing, delivering a TEDx talk, and starting a YouTube channel that is gaining traction. I'm witnessing my side income grow and am on the path to financial independence.
The Existence of Gatekeepers
So, why should we be concerned about the gatekeepers? If we truly believe our stories are important, that our ambitions are noble, and that we can reach our goals, then what do their opinions matter? It’s high time for us to step beyond our comfort zones and begin sharing our stories.
