Discover 6 Vibrant Communities to Engage with in New York

Chapter 1: Introduction to Networking in New York
Upon relocating to New York a few years back, I often heard comments from friends and family about the city's relentless pace, the lack of time for meaningful connections, and the overwhelming nature of it all. While these observations were valid, I quickly discovered that immersing myself in the local scene was not as daunting as it seemed. My background in business development within the non-profit and maritime sectors prepared me well for engaging with various stakeholders, allowing me to embrace the idea of networking rather than shy away from it. I actually found joy in meeting new people in the Big Apple.
However, the onset of COVID changed everything. Over 1.5 years, social events dwindled, crowds dispersed, and I too found myself retreating into the comfort of home. It became increasingly challenging to seek out events and muster the motivation to step out from my pajamas and engage in person. Nevertheless, some of the most incredible individuals I encountered were at gatherings I almost skipped!
As a founder, the support from the community is unparalleled. Recently, I shared my new journey as a founder and received numerous inquiries about navigating the tech and startup landscape in New York. To assist those interested, I’m highlighting some of the most engaging Summer Socials I attended in 2022:
Section 1.1: The Bloom by Jasmine Anouna
Jasmine has cultivated an inspiring community of passionate social impact advocates working across various fields, including gender equality, climate innovation, and mental health. Her newsletter, The Bloom, serves as an informative resource that tracks developments at the intersection of social impact. I had the pleasure of attending a delightful picnic potluck that Jasmine hosted in Central Park this summer. For more insights, be sure to connect with her!
Section 1.2: Small Biz PR Group by Gloria Chou
Gloria, a powerhouse in PR and podcasting, has showcased my writing endeavors, from my features as a wine sommelier in The Penny Hoarder to my founder story highlighted in Authority Magazine. Join her Facebook group to meet fellow founders making strides in wellness, beauty, and executive coaching. Don't miss her live sessions, where you can connect directly with journalists from prominent publications like Business Insider.
Section 1.3: Products By Women by Naimeesha Murthy
Naimeesha is a true trailblazer for BIPOC women and immigrants entering the tech industry in New York. With her background in Product Management, investing, and community building, she has fostered a network of 25,000 women in product roles. Naimeesha was recently a keynote speaker at General Assembly, where she led discussions on women in tech, overcoming imposter syndrome, and the importance of visibility.
Section 1.4: NY Tech & Biz Mixers by Andrew & Mike
Andrew and Mike’s rooftop mixers are ideal for connecting with founders, investors, mentors, and tech professionals while enjoying stunning views. The energy at these events is exceptional, and I even volunteered at a recent gathering that attracted over 1,000 professionals in New York. Keep an eye out for their upcoming events!
Section 1.5: Rachel Cantor and Kyle Hagge’s Adult Play Date
Yes, you read that correctly—a networking event that felt like an adult play date, complete with a 90s music guessing game, snacks, and coloring activities. It was a unique and enjoyable way to connect, even though I wished my artistic skills were a bit better! I’ve been a fan of Rachel’s content since discovering Sidekick by Morning Brew and look forward to more of her delightfully specific events.
Section 1.6: Better Product Community at Innovate Map
The Better Product Community, spearheaded by Innovate Map, offers a platform for product leaders to share insights on creating and marketing superior digital products. Ashley and her team have organized numerous “Pour Over” meet-ups and live webinars featuring venture firms and startup founders focused on refining pitch strategies and user journey mapping. It’s an excellent opportunity to engage with product managers and delve into UI/UX, research, and design.
Conclusion: Looking Ahead
That wraps up my list for now! I'm excited to attend a Pitch and Run meetup at Chelsea Pier, which occurs every Monday and Friday at 9 AM. Time to lace up my running shoes for that extra mile!
