Recently, I examined a thought-provoking book by a distinguished Scientist, Philosopher, and Theologian, John Lennox, an emeritus professor at Oxford. He is a notable Christian apologist whose insights are frequently featured in media discussions. It is essential to clarify that, although I align with many of Lennox's views, I identify as an Atheist.

Lennox has engaged in debates with prominent figures such as Christopher Hitchens, achieving significant acclaim for his performances. His latest work, titled 2084, has inspired me to initiate a series of articles that engage with its themes.

The Justification for AI Alarmism

To understand why AI alarmism—or even a general interest in AI—is warranted, it's crucial to examine the landscape, as Lennox does in his opening chapter. He adopts a rather pessimistic view of AI's future, one that I don't fully share. However, I have great respect for his extensive experience and analytical skills, which may inform his perspective.

Lennox cites influential works like Sapiens and Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari, which contribute to his conclusions. He also references George Orwell's 1984, Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, and Dan Brown's Origins, drawing poignant connections. Throughout my analysis of Lennox's book, I will highlight how Sapiens chronicles our species' evolutionary journey, a narrative that Lennox believes is overly reductive. Both he and I express skepticism toward the idea that random evolutionary processes can fully account for the emergence of complex life.

He quotes the UK Astronomer Royal, Lord Rees, who states, "We can have zero confidence that the dominant intelligences a few centuries hence will have any emotional resonance with us, even though they may have an algorithmic understanding of how we behaved."

Pope Francis's remarks from September 2019 resonate here as well, warning, "If technological advancement leads to greater inequalities, it cannot be considered true progress. If technology becomes an enemy to the common good, we risk regressing into barbarism."

The Pope and Lennox's observations may appear disconnected from their primary objectives, yet they highlight the importance of including diverse voices in the debate on AI. Lennox rightly argues that expertise in a specific field is not a prerequisite for discussing the societal impacts of technology. Our varied perspectives add depth to the conversation.

Engaging with AI

While many are now familiar with the concept of Artificial Intelligence, the conversation can become complex. In future discussions, we will define what A.I. encompasses. For now, let's revisit Lennox's insights on two technical challenges and a broader question regarding AI.

He outlines two significant issues in creating artificial life:

  1. Even with a comprehensive understanding of human reasoning, how do we abstract from physical situations to apply reasoning rules?
  2. How can a computer develop and maintain an internal mental model of the real world, similar to how a blind person visualizes their surroundings?

These distinctions highlight the gap between AI and genuine intelligence, which encompasses attributes like life, heart, soul, and mind. In closing, I echo Lennox's poignant question: "How can an ethical dimension be integrated into an algorithm devoid of heart, soul, and mind?"

This inquiry raises valid concerns about AI's development and its potential threats to privacy, freedom, and our very existence, while compelling us to reflect on our origins and challenge the assumptions prevalent in a materialist society.
