Working Smarter: Building Your Own Path to Success

Chapter 1: The Myth of Hard Work
You've probably heard the term "lazy girl jobs." These roles allow you to relax, occasionally send emails, and enjoy a coffee while earning more than many blue-collar workers. I've experienced both worlds: laboring in trades to demonstrate my value to my employer.
In my youth, I struggled with self-esteem. At one company, new hires worked in full view of managers, almost like fish in an aquarium. The naive 18-year-old version of myself worked tirelessly to showcase my potential. In their eyes, I was just another cog in the machine.
A half-hearted "thank you" was the extent of their appreciation, insufficient to make up for the meager pay. The truth is, they likely didn't notice my efforts until I decided to leave.
When turnover happened, they often hired someone perceived as less driven, who would inevitably match the effort dictated by their salary. The right mindset was irrelevant; what mattered was that the CEO and shareholders cared about the bottom line. The rest of us were expendable.
Leaving that company was bittersweet. With wide eyes, they questioned my departure, asking about my new salary. Their offer? A mere dollar more per hour, despite the new role being located more conveniently, offering superior benefits, and a less toxic work environment.
Another frustrating reality was their tendency to hold back compliments until it was too late. I spent six months laboring hard, only to hear my first positive feedback on my last day.
It's important to understand that compensation is a reflection of a company's values. Setting clear personal boundaries is essential.
I still put forth my best effort at my current corporate job, not out of desperation but to keep boredom at bay. Staring at a monotonous cubicle wall while counting down the minutes can lead to a feeling of disconnection from reality.
Despite this, I've managed to strike a balance. When stress builds up, I know it’s time to take a step back and slow my pace. This allows me to brainstorm writing ideas outside of work hours.
When you find an organization that values you, you’ll realize that investing in your personal passions benefits them as well. Conversely, if you bottle up your frustrations, you risk a hasty departure.
Writing has become my outlet for processing these feelings. Each extra effort I expended for a company now finds its way into my writing.
Had I dedicated that same energy to my own projects, I would have felt less pressure from their demands. It’s never too late to shift your focus.
After six months of writing online, my productivity has increased, and I've earned my first income. Each article helps build a foundation for my future endeavors.
More than ever, I've come to appreciate the writing craft and, more importantly, myself.
That’s the crux of it all, isn’t it? This isn't about undermining a company; it’s about prioritizing self-respect.
