Chapter 1: The Overwhelm of Home Workouts
Navigating the multitude of home exercise options available today can be quite daunting. From YouTube and Instagram to ZOOM classes, the choices are endless. But what if you're simply looking to create your own routine?
Over the past few months, I've introduced you to the Train Like A WLF podcasts, aiming to help you understand how home workouts should effectively function—from mastering breath control to embracing the burn.
Now, it’s time to delve deeper into specifics, as otherwise, we might find ourselves lost in educated tangents. (Spoiler alert: that’s likely to be me!)
I want you to equip your home fitness area with essential mental tools. Since we began with the importance of breath, it’s crucial to also discuss Exposing Yoga Myths.
Yoga has become a favored practice for many seeking relief from stress, thanks to its straightforward postures that seem accessible to everyone. However, practicing yoga incorrectly can lead to serious injuries.
Without sufficient muscle strength to stabilize your body, you risk injury during your sessions. You might end up feeling worse instead of better post-practice.
I can personally attest to this. Why would a flexible taekwondo enthusiast like me turn to deadlifting? Because the delightful sensation of pure yoga stretching left my muscles overly elongated.
Muscles behave similarly to fabric; when stretched, they don’t always return to their original state. In martial arts like taekwondo, it's essential for muscles to immediately retract after a kick. (No one wants to be the person who gets their leg caught mid-air—those clips are only amusing on TikTok!)
Neglecting strength training while practicing yoga can also cause issues for your hips and back, diminishing their ability to maintain core stability.
This is where Exposing Yoga Myths shines. Within just a few pages, you will benefit from the collective insights of Melissa, Ariana, and Kim. Their expertise will save you years of frustration—and possibly some embarrassing moments—by clarifying how the body functions in relation to yoga.
They candidly discuss the common pitfalls of yoga culture, providing you with a defense against any misleading trends you might encounter during your own yoga journey. Their examples, such as how many individuals overstretch their lumbar region or hamstrings in Downward Dog, are both relatable and humorous, making the content enjoyable to digest.
So, I urge you to read this book. Absorb its wisdom. And may you successfully steer clear of any yoga traps found on YouTube. (Though, do check out Trap Yoga—it's fantastic!)
Thank you for taking the time to read this! If you appreciate my insights on fitness, you can join me for virtual training sessions anywhere at Work Life Fitness, and connect with me on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Who knows? I might even have a YouTube channel guiding you on how to practice Downward Dog without overstretching those hamstrings! (And if you’re truly interested in my fitness journey, take a look at The Miracle on 98th Street, my memoir that packs a punch against The Bell Jar.)
While yoga may seem more user-friendly than my personal favorites, such as Animal Flow from Global Bodyweight Training or Vitamin by Gold Medal Bodies, remember that these practices—rooted in yoga—demand a level of coordination that can be challenging for those still getting acquainted with their bodies in our slowly returning world. This detour is merely to remind you that there are alternatives to yoga if you wish to explore them. The human body is designed to stretch in diverse ways.
Note: To my Virgo readers: please bear in mind that Exposing Yoga Myths has its share of grammatical quirks and editing flaws, but the valuable truths and information within are well worth your attention.
