Understanding the Mental Struggles of Running

I have faced significant challenges when it comes to running. Despite the popular belief that it gets easier over time, I find it incredibly frustrating. I often feel as if I'm trapped on an endless journey with no clear destination in sight.

Instead of immersing myself in the music playing through my earbuds, my thoughts constantly drift to the distance still ahead. I end up feeling like I’m punishing myself throughout the entire run. This negative mindset has persisted for as long as I can remember.

Consistency has also been a challenge for me, largely due to my aversion to the activity. I frequently find reasons to skip a run, reassuring myself that I’ll make up for it tomorrow. When tomorrow arrives, I often repeat the same excuse, and before I know it, weeks have gone by since my last run.

Pushing through this mental barrier has been tough. I struggle to simply get it done, regardless of my feelings. I try to convince myself that the effort will be worth it in the long run. In those moments when I skip a workout, I tell myself, “Taking a break is beneficial; you deserve it.”

However, that mindset only provides temporary relief. The following day, feelings of disappointment and regret inevitably set in. It's perplexing why shifting my mindset to achieve what I want feels so daunting. You might think that a strong desire to accomplish something would be enough motivation, but that hasn’t been my experience.

Many of you might relate to this. We all have aspirations for improvement but often lack the drive to act on them. It’s easier to remain in our comfort zones, avoiding tasks that we dislike, even if we know they are necessary for our growth.

The truth is, life is fleeting, and we must change our mindset NOW. We often look at those who have achieved their goals and wonder about their secret: the answer is simple— they take action despite obstacles. They put in the long hours and early mornings to reach their objectives.

Over time, I’ve come to realize that persistence makes a difference. As I continued to run, I discovered that it does indeed become easier, and surprisingly, I even started to find enjoyment in it!

Now, I can run without significant issues and have maintained a consistent routine for several months. While I still don’t love running, I do it because it benefits my health, fitness, and mental state.
