In a shadowy part of an unremarkable city, there existed a man with an unusual shop. The locals were barely scraping by, often lacking even the most basic means to survive. Food was hard to come by, clothing was threadbare, and many had given up on heating their homes.

Then, one day, a peculiar figure appeared. He was an elderly gentleman, diligently cleaning out a store on a corner where other shopkeepers had long since given up, disheartened by the lack of customers. Yet, with a quiet determination, he opened his shop the following day.

Inside, the shelves brimmed with essential items: food, books, clothing, and even toys for the children. Initially, the townsfolk rejoiced, for their meager gardens had ceased to provide sustenance, and animals had vanished from the area.

However, their excitement quickly dwindled as they remembered their empty pockets. The man behind the counter noticed their despondency and called out, “Don’t worry, you won’t need money here.”

This proclamation sparked a mix of disbelief and hope among the crowd. Despite their reservations, they shuffled into the store, a ragtag group of hungry souls. Many were gaunt, their clothes barely held together by patches. Some had run out of materials to mend their garments and walked around in tatters.

A man approached the counter, his arms laden with basic provisions and shirts for his sons. “How do I pay?” he asked, “I have no money.”

“Simple, my friend. Just come right over here,” the shopkeeper replied, leading him to a quirky-looking register. “Do you have something you wish to forget?”

The man was taken aback. “What do you mean?”

“Trust me,” said the merchant, offering him a pencil and a slip of paper. “Write down a bad memory.”

The man complied, inscribing “my father’s funeral.”

“Excellent choice,” the shopkeeper responded. He guided the man to a machine and instructed him to place his hand on it. After a brief whirring sound, the merchant declared, “You’re all set.”

The man felt an inexplicable lift in his spirits. “Is that it?”

“That’s all there is to it.”

Soon, a line formed as townspeople exchanged unwanted memories for vital goods. Some purchased clothing, while others sought food. One woman even traded the day she broke her arm for a toy for her daughter’s birthday.

For the first time in ages, joy returned to the town, and the mysterious merchant, dubbed the Memory Man, found his shop bustling day and night.

However, over time, residents began to exhaust their supply of painful memories. They had to make tougher choices, eventually parting with memories they cherished: their child’s first steps, their first day of school, beloved films. As their situation deteriorated, the town slipped back into despair.

People grew hungry once again, refraining from buying clothes, and the cold returned. The Memory Man was only visited in dire circumstances, and desperation soon took hold.

One day, a father and son entered the shop. “Please, food for my boy,” the father requested.

The Memory Man provided ample food. The father scribbled something on the paper slip: “Charlie.” With a nod, the Memory Man activated the machine, which whirred once more.

As they left the shop, the father turned to his son, who would now forever remain nameless.
