# Review of My All-Time Favorite Game Boy: A Nostalgic Upgrade

Chapter 1: Rediscovering Retro Gaming
During the pandemic, I found myself captivated by the YouTube channel The Retro Future. I nearly attempted to mod my Game Boy Advance, but after watching the tutorial and realizing the complexity of the process, I opted to purchase a pre-modded unit from eBay instead. While I enjoyed the GBA for a while, I ultimately found it uncomfortable for extended play sessions. This led me to acquire an Anbernic RG552, which offered a larger frame for better hand comfort.
However, I primarily played Game Boy titles on the RG552, and its size made portability a challenge. While the GBA fit neatly in my pocket, I often found myself disheartened by its discomfort during use. After a hiatus from gaming, I stumbled upon a video by Byte Review titled "My Everyday Carry Tech Bag | EDC 2022." The Game Boy Pocket showcased in this video was visually stunning; its clear plastic casing and silver screen cover offered a unique aesthetic I had never encountered before. I was immediately drawn to it and, after much contemplation, decided to purchase this beautifully modded Game Boy Pocket.
Hardware and Comfort
This Game Boy Pocket is designed to resemble the limited edition 1997 Famitsu Nintendo Game Boy Pocket from Japan. While my version may not be as rare as the original, it features an upgraded display that the original lacked. Though I knew I wouldn't be able to play Game Boy Advance titles on this device, I had several classic Pokémon and Zelda Game Boy games to enjoy. I was curious to see if it would provide a more comfortable experience than the GBA.
Upon unboxing, I was struck by the same awe I felt while watching the Byte Review video. The clarity of the plastic, the satisfying feel of the buttons, and the stunning silver screen cover left a lasting impression.
Inserting a Pokémon Red cartridge added to the visual appeal, with the red game complementing the clear body beautifully. The screen, now featuring a modded IPS display, does offer a limited color palette, but I appreciate the retro aesthetic it provides, fitting seamlessly with the overall design. The top of the device includes dual controls for adjusting screen color and brightness. The copper-colored tape on the left cycles through 30+ color options, while the right side controls brightness levels.
After over two weeks of gameplay, including more than 10 hours on Pokémon Red, I can confidently say my hands no longer ache as they did while using the Game Boy Advance. Although the experience differs from that of a Switch or RG552, it evokes nostalgia for the days I spent playing my Game Boy Pocket.
Living the Classic Battery Experience
One significant downside is the battery life. With the upgraded screen, I have had to replace the batteries three times since purchase, averaging just two hours of gameplay with fresh Rayovac AAA batteries. I’m considering switching to rechargeable batteries or perhaps exploring a wireless charging mod.
To test battery longevity, I used Duracell Optimum batteries to see if they would outperform the Rayovacs. In hindsight, it would have been wise to include regular Duracell or Energizer batteries in my experiment. However, I opted for the Optimum due to their appealing design.
Here are my test results:
Surprisingly, the Optimum batteries not only lasted longer but exceeded my expectations, providing over two hours of gameplay with plenty of life still remaining. I wanted to wait until they were completely drained before concluding my review, but their impressive longevity prompted me to share my findings sooner.
A Satisfying Purchase
I plan to sell my GBA mod and Anbernic RG552, as the cost of this Game Boy Pocket was nearly $190. The international shipping and currency conversion made it pricier than anticipated, but I feel it’s unique enough to justify the expense. For me, single-use devices are invaluable; I've enjoyed listening to audiobooks while playing Pokémon Red. This Game Boy has become my go-to alternative to scrolling endlessly on my iPhone or iPad.
While I’m aware that the novelty may fade, I genuinely hope the comfort of this device encourages me to reach for it more often than my GBA. Its pocket-sized design is incredibly convenient. Here’s to hoping I can conquer some Pokémon Gyms soon before frustration leads me to stash it away!
