Chapter 1: The Shift in Human Adaptation
Human beings exhibit remarkable adaptability when faced with significant changes. While the transition may not always be enjoyable, we tend to find solutions. However, as these changes become permanent, a period of re-learning and adjustment is required.
Section 1.1: The Global Impact of COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic uniquely affected humanity, prompting organizations to adapt in unexpected ways. Despite facing planning challenges, the resilience displayed by many businesses was impressive. At Columbia Executive Education, we faced the cancellation of an entire semester. Yet, we pivoted to a live online format, which surprisingly enhanced networking opportunities beyond what in-person events offered.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Evolution of the Speaking Industry
The speaking industry experienced a drastic decline initially, but soon adapted with virtual events. This transformation allowed professionals to connect globally without the constraints of travel, enabling me to engage with audiences in Africa, Europe, and Asia all in one day.
Chapter 2: Rethinking Business Norms
The first video discusses the reopening of schools during the pandemic, highlighting the challenges and adaptations made in educational settings.
The second video examines the surging cases of COVID-19 and the growing crisis, providing insights into the global situation and responses.
Section 2.1: Virtual Transactions and Interactions
Prior to the pandemic, it was widely believed that significant business transactions required in-person meetings. However, the shift to virtual interactions has proven this assumption incorrect. Studies indicate that buyers are increasingly favoring virtual sales processes, leading to reduced travel for many professionals.
Subsection 2.1.1: The Benefits of Online Learning
At Columbia, transitioning courses online allowed us to include participants who might not have attended in person. A memorable instance was a student from Australia joining a course at 2 AM. This format not only facilitated learning but also fostered a global community that continues to thrive.
Section 2.2: Embracing Remote Work Opportunities
An unexpected email from a student seeking internship sponsorship surprised me. She mentioned her plans to work remotely from Italy, demonstrating the potential of remote work to tap into global talent without geographical constraints.
Chapter 3: The Challenges of Hybrid Learning
While in-person teaching has its advantages, hybrid teaching presents unique challenges. It lacks the physical cues necessary for effective communication, leading to a diluted experience for those attending virtually.
Section 3.1: Maintaining Community Connections
My "Friday Fireside Chat" series became a way to foster community during the pandemic, featuring a variety of guests. Despite scaling back to bi-weekly sessions, these discussions remain a highlight for me. Additionally, I initiated a weekly newsletter to stimulate thought and conversation.
Subsection 3.1.1: The Unseen Advantages of Virtual Interactions
The pandemic has highlighted the equalizing potential of virtual interactions, particularly for individuals who might feel marginalized in traditional settings. This realization encourages a more mindful approach to how we conduct our work.
Section 3.2: Opportunities for Innovation
As we emerge from this experience, we have the chance to rethink our assumptions about work. The team at Valize is excited to collaborate on new projects, including enhancing our advisory programs and refining our software tools to support innovation.
