During our formative years, it’s common to concentrate on our strengths. This approach can serve us well in many aspects of life. However, once I completed my education and transitioned into the professional realm, I encountered several vital lessons. One piece of advice that I wish someone had shared with me earlier is this: while it’s essential to recognize your strengths, it’s equally important to harmonize them with your genuine interests.
In a perfect world, everyone would earn a living by pursuing their passions. This is my aspiration as well, but achieving it is often a significant challenge. Many individuals find themselves balancing their skills with their interests, while others might engage in work that they don’t find enjoyable simply because it pays the bills. Although there’s nothing inherently wrong with this, it can be quite exhausting over time.
Consider this: a career can extend over four decades or more, which is an extensive period. I soon realized that maintaining motivation would be impossible if I wasn't engaged in work I truly loved.
Let’s illustrate this with an analogy. Imagine aspiring to be an NBA player while detesting basketball. The path to success demands thousands of hours of practice over many years. If you despise the sport, the journey is likely to be arduous. In contrast, those who are passionate about basketball would play regardless of financial compensation, giving them a competitive edge.
This isn’t to suggest that one should simply chase their passion without thought. Rather, it’s crucial to find a balance between what you excel at and what captivates your interest. Solely focusing on one aspect might not yield the best outcomes. Ideally, we should aim to earn a living that also provides a sense of fulfillment.
Had I been aware of this before entering college, I would have explored a broader array of subjects. I wish I had taken the time to experiment and discover new interests. Instead, I opted for a narrow focus on STEM, as that was my area of strength. Although I had some enjoyment in that field, I now find myself contemplating other career options, uncertain if engineering is the path I want to pursue for decades to come.
