Finding Solace Through Writing: My Journey with the Freewrite Traveler

Written on

Chapter 1: The Prompt That Resounded

"Where in the world are you writing?" This question posed by Freewrite seemed aimed at inspiring writers to share tales of their idyllic and picturesque writing locations, highlighting the allure of their portable, distraction-free device.

Initially, I dismissed it, feeling that my situation didn’t fit this romanticized narrative. Yet, as the day progressed, the query lingered in my thoughts, leading me to reflect on my writing experiences from past travels and the aspirations I hold for the future.

I wish I could paint a picture of myself lounging in a hammock by the sea, sipping a cocktail, and soaking in a spectacular sunset, complete with a stunning photograph to accompany the memory. Regrettably, that’s not my present reality.

Nevertheless, I’ve come to realize that while my journey might lack picturesque beauty, it remains authentic and meaningful, thanks to the impact the Freewrite Traveler has had on my life.

As a writer, I haven’t utilized my Traveler as much as I would like. Recently, it has become my tool for documenting thoughts and emotions as I care for my mother, who is currently receiving hospice care at home.

These moments are fleeting and already beginning to fade in my memory. I yearn to capture every word and interaction with my mom as I grapple with the heartbreaking reality of her battle against aggressive brain cancer. The Traveler has granted me that opportunity.

The bright backlight of my laptop and the noise of its keyboard were disruptive to her much-needed rest. Handwritten journaling presented its own set of challenges; I struggle to write fast enough to keep pace with my thoughts before my mother needs my assistance. Moreover, I know that I wouldn’t revisit handwritten notes with the same ease as I can access digital documents.

Distractions abound, too, with a relentless list of tasks demanding my attention—updating friends and family, liaising with nurses, and researching medications to ensure her comfort. These distractions often pull me away from the painful yet necessary process of confronting my grief.

In this context, my Traveler has been an invaluable asset. Its silent keys and non-glare screen allow me to write without disturbing my mother, who rests peacefully beside me. I can immerse myself in my thoughts without the interruptions of texts, emails, or social media notifications.

This ability to be present for my mother while remaining free from external distractions is a gift for which I will always be thankful.

While I may long to share stories of writing from a picturesque seaside locale, that’s not my current experience. Instead, this writing tool has given me something far more precious than any travel adventure. It allows me to sit next to my mom, my dearest friend, listening to her steady breaths, while I reflect on the emotional journey of each day, taking a moment to heal through my writing.
