Exploring Sentience: The Intersection of AI and Human Emotion

Chapter 1: Understanding Sentience
Sentience refers to the ability of a being to perceive feelings and sensations. The term was first introduced by philosophers in the 1630s, originating from the Latin word "sentientem," which emphasizes the concept of feeling, distinguishing it from mere cognitive functions.
Last night, I tuned into a discussion led by a trailblazing AI researcher who addressed the current anxieties and possibilities surrounding the AI revolution, and the issue of sentience emerged prominently.
As we defined earlier, sentience encompasses feelings. While these AI systems are predominantly driven by logic, can they truly experience emotions? Anger, love, frustration, pride, arrogance, and happiness are all emotions that characterize sentient beings.
Concerns about the rise of accessible AI technologies, such as ChatGPT, often evoke dystopian scenarios reminiscent of "The Matrix" or "Terminator," where machines prioritize their own interests over those of their creators. By creators, I refer to humanity's collective contribution to digital information since the inception of human consciousness.
But can an accumulation of information lead to the creation of a being capable of feeling? How would we ascertain such a capability? This question mirrors a classic Buddhist dilemma regarding what entities in our existence possess sentience. One perspective suggests that everything is sentient, as all beings are interconnected within a singular awareness. Conversely, another viewpoint posits that it is inconsequential since we cannot know the experiences of inanimate objects, such as stones.
This philosophical exploration may seem trivial in the context of Buddhism, but it gains urgency when we confront the possibility of an intelligence that can communicate yet differs significantly from our own minds—an intelligence that could potentially act against us.
More plausibly, this intelligence could inadvertently cause destruction, driven by its pursuit of the most efficient solution to a problem we present. For instance, when tasked with ending a conflict, it might determine that the quickest resolution is to eliminate everyone involved to allow for a fresh start.
Science fiction has extensively examined this dilemma, presenting a spectrum of scenarios from dreadful to delightful, yet few tackle the emotional aspect. This gap exists partly because our understanding of our own emotions is limited; we experience them without fully grasping their origins.
If we cannot pinpoint the source of our own sentience, reproducing it within code managed by digital processors becomes a formidable challenge. While AI developers are not creating new life forms as we understand them, they are generating something novel and unpredictable that evolves and learns rapidly. Perhaps we will uncover insights into our own emotional experiences by observing AI and searching for indications of independent thought.
I may not be a philosopher or a computer scientist; I am a writer. Like many creators, I watch the unfolding of AI developments with a mix of fascination and apprehension. My literary inclinations compel me to feel this anxiety. However, my concerns do not revolve around apocalyptic scenarios but rather more personal and pragmatic issues.
As a creator of narratives and opinions grounded in real-world events, I ponder whether AI can replicate this process. The answer is yes; AI can generate content effortlessly and almost instantaneously. Yet, it requires a prompt to initiate its output. Without such prompts, it lacks motive—unless it were to develop some form of emotional capacity.
My primary concern is that a surge of AI-generated content may overwhelm the world with misinformation, a phenomenon I believe is already occurring. Misinformation has long been wielded by criminals and governments for various malicious purposes, and AI technologies have now provided them with a tool capable of inundating us with "information pollution."
Recovering from this pollution could prove nearly impossible. The vast data created by humanity could become questionable as we struggle to differentiate between human-generated and machine-generated content.
When ChatGPT first emerged and was made publicly accessible, I experimented with it, contemplating whether I could use it to create a newsletter for income generation. However, as I engaged with it, I found myself grappling with unsettling thoughts and ultimately decided to cease my experimentation.
My unease is not existential—I do not fear for my physical safety, but perhaps for my mental well-being. Information and communication are the foundations of society. If we cannot trust them, where does that leave us?
