Chapter 1: The Power of Hope
Restoring hope in your life is more achievable than you might think.

Before I embarked on my journey of healing, I often recoiled at the mere suggestion of hope. To me, it seemed fragile, akin to just "trying." It felt uncertain, as if I was navigating through existence without any core strength.
In retrospect, I realize that my skepticism about the future clouded my capacity to believe in hope. I envision my parents, who mustered every ounce of hope to escape the tyranny in Czechoslovakia. What else could have driven them, if not hope itself?
Nowadays, when I express, "I hope this works," it signifies a willingness to take a chance, to make a choice, and to spark change. It’s like tentatively stepping into the waters of the unknown, daring to envision a different and potentially better reality.
To experience hope is to cultivate positive thoughts. It's about fostering an optimistic mindset. Hope is like feathers; it has buoyancy. Even when life feels chaotic, hope rises to the surface like a guiding light, playfully winking at us.
This weekend, I am preparing for a move. My partner and I are combining our lives, transitioning from my solo existence with my son over the last five years to becoming a united "we."
Having navigated two marriages, I understand that relationships demand resilience. What distinguishes my current situation from the past is the presence of hope. My life is already fulfilling; my hope is for something even more remarkable than what I’ve experienced.
When I release my attachment to outcomes, hope transforms into a form of prayer. Here are a couple of instances where I am hopeful:
I hope that the counseling session involving my sister, my mother, and me ignites communication and connection where previously there was none.
I hope that moving in with my partner will deepen our love, connection, and curiosity about each other.
What Hope Means to Me:
Hope represents trusting in God, who always desires the best for me, even when it diverges from what my ego believes is best. Hope is marveling at the vast possibilities the future holds.
Hope is non-judgmental and agenda-free. It resembles a six-month-old awakening in her crib, playfully exploring the sunbeams streaming through the window. Hope embodies innocence and trust; it is the last flicker of life to extinguish.
Hope allows me to envision something greater than my current reality. It means holding my aspirations in one hand while grasping the courage to accept disappointment if my ego's desires are unmet. Hope resonates on the same frequency as love, representing optimism in its purest form.
Hope requires letting go of distrust. It is like a squirrel burying its nuts throughout the yard, anticipating their discovery come winter. Hope is a dandelion seed drifting on the wind, seeking a place to take root.
Hope is the sun rising in the morning and the moon appearing at night. It sends messages into the future, stretching across time. Hope serves as a foghorn, a lighthouse beam, or a major chord in a sorrowful melody.
Hope is the bright day following a week of rain or the rain that rejuvenates after a period of drought. It is the resurgence of strength in the body after illness. Hope is making it to your flight despite being stuck in traffic.
Hope is synchronicity, knowing that regardless of life's twists and turns, it will always uplift me.
"You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will live as one." — John Lennon
Hope is the belief that everything that unfolds is essential for our evolution as a species.
